a hard freeze warning remains in effect this morning for all of southeast alabama…south georgia…and north florida…except florida panhandle coastal communities where a freeze warning remains in effect…

a hard freeze watch is in effect tonight for much of south-
central georgia east of the flint river…and portions of north florida east of the ochlockonee river…while a freeze watch is in effect elsewhere…

temperatures are falling steadily this morning…despite winds remaining slightly elevated. confidence is still relatively high that winds will calm within an hour or so of sunrise and allow several locations across the tri-state region to dip to hard freeze levels. tonight…with the calm center of the surface ridge still forecast to be in place over our eastern cwa…conditions remain favorable for another hard freeze…of longer duration…in these locations. just how far west the hard freeze will spread is a little uncertain. thus a watch remains in effect and will likely be refined and upgraded later today.

URGENT – WEATHER MESSAGE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE TALLAHASSEE FL
207 PM EST SAT FEB 16 2013

the first widespread hard freeze of the season is expected
tonight…

a strong cold front has swept across the forecast area today. behind the front…arctic high pressure will quickly spread east from texas. this should result in a gradual calming of winds from west to east beginning after midnight. although winds will not go completely calm for most locations…the efficient transport of cold air upstream through the first part of the night will help drive temperatures down rather quickly. the first widespread hard freeze of the season will be the result. coastal panhandle
communities are the only locations excluded from the hard freeze warning. in these locations a light freeze warning remains in effect.

the cold high will move just east of the area on sunday night. this will shift the coldest air over the suwannee valley. another hard freeze will be possible across inland portions of the florida big bend and adjacent counties in south georgia. a light freeze is expected elsewhere away from the immediate coast.

Hard freeze warning now in effect from 2 AM EST /1 AM cst/ to 9 AM EST /8 AM cst/ sunday,
, freeze watch in effect from late sunday night through monday morning…

* temperature: lows 24 to 28 tonight and 27 to 32 sunday night.

* duration: hard freeze durations around 2 hours with below freezing durations around 7 hours.

the first widespread hard freeze of the season is expected
tonight…

a strong cold front will quickly pass through the tri-state area through the day today. behind the front…high pressure will quickly overspread the southeast. this should result in a gradual calming of winds from west to east beginning after midnight. although winds will not go completely calm for most locations…the efficient transport of cold air upstream through the first part of the night will help drive temperatures down rather quickly.
thus…once winds go light there will be little cooling left to do to reach hard freeze criteria. in addition…the calm center of the ridge should pass directly over north florida allowing for the possibility of patchy frost closer to dawn. coastal panhandle communities are the only locations excluded from the hard freeze warning. in these locations a freeze warning has been issued.

URGENT – WEATHER MESSAGE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE TALLAHASSEE FL
138 PM EST FRI FEB 15 2013

one of the coldest nights so far this winter in our area
expected on saturday night…

high pressure will settle into the eastern gulf coast region on saturday night in the wake of a strong cold front. clear skies and light winds…in addition to the very dry nature of the air
mass…should support strong radiational cooling with temperatures quickly falling below freezing in the mid to late evening. analog and probabilistic guidance based on model forecasts suggests around a 50 percent chance of a hard freeze…which is high enough to warrant a watch for all of our non-coastal areas.
